Live orientation Program on SALT project to all teachers on 24.12.2022

Andhra Pradesh has launched the Supporting Andhra Learning Transformation (SALT) program to transform foundational learning in government schools for which the World Bank has approved a $250 million loan. The main objectives of the program are to strengthen foundation schools and train and develop the skills of teachers. There are more than 40 lakh children and nearly 2 lakh teachers in Andhra Pradesh's public school education system.

Supporting Andhra's Learning Transformation (SALT) project

The Andhra Pradesh government, the central government and the World Bank have signed legal agreements for a $250 million loan for the “Supporting Andhra Learning Transformation (SALT) Project”.

About the SALT project

      The SALT project aims to improve the quality of learning for more than 50 lakh students in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

      The project was launched with an aim to cover:

      There are 40 lakh students between the ages of six and fourteen in 45,000 government schools

      10 lakh children aged between three to six years are registered in Anganwadis.

      1,90,000 teachers and

      More than 50 thousand people are Anganwadi workers.

      Under this project, a one-year preschool-level course will be introduced in 3,500 schools in tribal blocks.

      The project was launched with a five-year time frame from 2021-22.

Importance of the project

SALT is the first of its innovative projects to train teachers, facilitate state-level evaluation and establish an effective education management & information system. This will help in providing universal access to quality education in the state. It will support Andhra Pradesh in fulfilling its vision of transforming government schools into vibrant educational institutions that focus on foundational learning for children.

Characteristics of the project

      It is a five-year results-based program for which the World Bank releases funds after achieving key targets.

      Under the project, the government has converted all Anganwadis in the state into pre-primary schools and linked them with nearby schools.
