The attention of all the District Education Officers of the State is hereby requested to implement the innovative program “Learn a Word a Day” with a view to ensure that the students from Class 1 have better vocabulary in English. 10.

Therefore, all the District Education Officers of the State are requested to communicate the action plan to the teachers and principals of all the schools under all the managements along with the suggested guidelines to implement the “Learn a word a day” program across the state. Strictly follow the guidelines from 01-01-2023 to 31-01-2023.

Program execution

The theme for the month of January 2023 is 'Vehicles'.

(Words are developed based on a theme each month)

Common words are selected to practice the process of using a dictionary.

January 2023, Activity Schedule:

* Every day one word is announced in the assembly.

* In the first period the class teacher writes the word and its meaning in the corner of the black board.

* In the English period, the teacher explains the word, its pronunciation, spelling, parts of speech and meaning of the word in both languages, other forms of the word if any and its usage. Students underline the word in the dictionary using a pencil.

* Students are asked to copy this word into a separate 100-page notebook to maintain as their “my own dictionary” that the teacher checks frequently.

Level – 1 Verbal drilling of English word with its Telugu meaning and vice versa. Students should circle the word in the dictionary with a pencil.

Level – 2, Level – 3 , Level 4- Teacher explains the word, its pronunciation, spelling, parts of speech and meaning of the word in both languages, other forms of the word if any and its usage. Students underline the word in the dictionary using a pencil.

* Every teacher should use that word as many times as possible in their conversation with students or as part of any other classroom transaction.

* The same word is repeated throughout the rest of the day

* Daily, the word can be displayed in the corner of the green board in the classroom / display a board in the verandah / display in the school assembly.

* All teachers are responsible for practicing the word in the first five minutes of the period. Students are asked to repeat the word and its meaning. English teacher should practice the usage of the word.

* Monitoring officers also check students' dictionaries and their notebooks.

* Assessment is conducted every fortnight (15 days) in the form of "Spell Bee" game. The words taught during the fortnight are used for the Spell Bee activity.
